The pace bowler has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an impressive average.
The Australian selection chief Bailey has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming historic rivalry.
There were concerns that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.
Initial reports from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on 21 November in Perth.
Bailey expressed that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about his chances of being involved.
"We're aware that the clock is ticking and there are permutations involved, not only the physical problem, but other factors as well," the selector added.
"It's positive. There's strong faith that he's going to play a significant role. Ideally from the opening match. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."
Previous Setbacks
The captain missed the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand recently after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.
Previous incidents include of back injuries, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.
The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the series.
Bailey noted that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.
Backup Options
In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.
The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from the national team for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of soreness in his side.
He labeled it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."
"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the initial game as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.
"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games anyway. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
