Super Typhoon Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Large-Scale Evacuations Confirmed

The island nation was severely impacted by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, resulting in at least two people dead and forced the evacuation of over a million residents.

Officials stated that the powerful weather system caused extensive flash flooding, storm surges, landslides, and destructive gale-force winds, prompting the relocation of millions of people across the country.

Widespread Destruction and Emergency Operations

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, emergency crews recorded floodwaters climbing to the tops of houses and residences washed out by strong flows.

“Our personnel saved fourteen people who were trapped atop a house engulfed in flood in a low-lying neighbourhood,” an emergency official explained. One resident also called in panic, saying the roof of his house was about to be ripped off by the wind. We rescued him along with four family members.”

As of Monday morning, officials confirmed two fatalities: a drowning victim on the island and a second individual killed after her home gave way in eastern Samar.

Storm Intensity and Projected Path

The intense storm was downgraded to a typhoon on Monday morning while moving over the Philippines’ largest island, home to the national capital.

Per the state weather service, its maximum winds decreased from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, but gusts peaked at more than 275 km/h.

The cyclone is projected to lose strength while heading in the direction of Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The country’s emergency management agency indicated it was still working to evaluate destruction to infrastructure and homes.

Approximately 6,000 evacuation centres have been opened to temporarily house 92,000 families.

Recent Context and Environmental Factors

The typhoon hit shortly following Typhoon Kalmaegi, which killed hundreds of lives and left dozens unaccounted for before moving on to Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Search operations for those still missing had to be suspended recently over risks for rescue workers.

Global warming is causing cyclones stronger and frequent. This typhoon marks the 21st typhoon to impact the nation this year.

Scientists have found that the rate of intense cyclones hitting the Philippines has risen doubled over the last two decades.

Global assessments indicate that intense storms result in an average of millions in dollars in losses to the country annually.

The nation’s leader declared a state of emergency last week due to the extensive devastation caused by the prior typhoon and the expected damage from the new storm.
